BANGALORE: Justice S R Nayak, Chairperson, Karnataka State Human Rights Commisison (KSHRC), on Tuesday called upon the adivasis to unite, to fight for their rights. Addressing the crowd gathered to celebrate the ‘World Adivasi Day’ here on Tuesday he said, “There are various groups among the adivasis, but there is no unity among these groups. If this is the case even after 100 years from now, adivasis and tribals will still be considered backward.”“Tribals are being exploited by potiticians. The tribals also should come forward and take part in active politics and make use of their fundamental rights. Together, uniting with farmers the tribals can fight for their rights,” he suggested.Speaking on the occasion, Amar Singh Thilamat, Vice President, Akhila Bharatiya Adivasi Vikasa Parishat, said, “As per the Union Government rules, since 2005, the tribals should have had a reservation of 7 per cent, but still only 3 per cent reservation is provided. All the adivasis should fight unitedly for proper reservation.”Talking specifically about the tribal forest-dwellers of Karnataka he said, “Under the Forest Act, the tribals residing in the forest should be provided land pattas, but this is not being done in Karnataka.” Thilamat, urged the Chairperson, KSHRC to take up the matter to the Government. He further said, “The tribals and adivasis should keep Ambedkar’s saying - ‘unite, educate and fight for your rights’ in mind and strive towards its achievement.”H D Basavaraju, President, Karnataka Adivasi Rakshana Parishath, M Krishnaiah, General Secretary, Karnataka Adivasi Rakshana Parishath were present. Around 1,000 adivasis from about 50 tribal communities from across the State were present at the event.
