As the 47-day trawling ban came to an end, about 600 mechanised boats ventured into the deep waters from the Kollam coast on Tuesday midnight.
The hopes are dismal this year owing to inconsistent monsoon. Fishermen fear that unlike in past years, the traditional boats will have a poor catch of the white fish (‘Parava’), mackerel (‘Ayala’) and tuna (‘Choora’) during the season. C T Suresh Kumar, Fisheries Deputy Director, Kollam told Express that the odds against the availability of fish will be known only after the first three days.
