KOCHI: The Health Department and the Pollution Control Board submitted their recommendation to the Perumbavoor Municipality after their two-day survey on the state of waste disposal systems in the municipality. The survey was conducted following protests by the residents of several panchayats around Perumbavoor town accusing the municipality of polluting their water bodies with untreated wastes. The survey has asked the municipal authorities to take immediate steps to clean up the Partythode canal, which passes through the municipality and later falls into the Periyar river. “The canal water is being used for lift irrigation further downstream in the panchayat. The department has also been asked to build a purification system downstream. The Health Department has asked the municipality to take steps to ensure the hygiene of the migrant labourers working in the area. “Periodical health check-ups must be conducted for the labourers. Awareness sessions must also be conducted regularly to help the labourers identify the symptoms of diseases like malaria, tuberculosis, typhoid and jaundice so that they can seek treatment before they spread. The owners or the contractors will be made responsible for taking these up,” said sources in the Health Department.“The recommendations will be taken up by the municipality.
