New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought a response from the Central government on setting up a special investigation team (SIT) into the killing of Kendriya Sahitya Akademi awardee and activist Professor MM Kalburgi.
A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra issued notices to the Centre and other investigating agencies, seeking their replies in two weeks.
The scholar was shot dead in August 2015 at his Dharwad residence in broad daylight by unknown assailants, who are yet to be nabbed.
The Kannada writer's wife Umadevibhas moved the petition for a court-monitored probe by a SIT to ensure those guilty are brought to book. Her plea stated that the murder has “left every right-minded person in society shell-shocked”.
“Every offence is a crime against society and is unpardonable, yet there are some species of ghastly, revolting and villainous violations of the invaluable right to life, which leave all sensible and right-minded persons of society shell-shocked and traumatised in the body and soul,” stated her petition.
She also raised apprehensions that the same organisation and killers behind the murders of activists Govind Pansare on February 16, 2015 in Kolhapur and Narendra Dabholkar on August 20, 2013 in Pune are behind her husband’s murder but a lack of co-ordination by different investigating agencies has taken the probe nowhere.
The scholar's murder is being investigated by Karnataka CID, National Investigating Agency (NIA), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Maharashtra Police but there has been no progress in the investigation till date.
