PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry Congress on Tuesday demanded a white paper detailing the distribution of relief to those who had been affected by cyclone Thane. At a press conference, Leader of Opposition V Vaithilingam said the Centre had made available an interim relief of Rs 125 crore to Puducherry to provide relief to the affected people. Vaithilingam alleged that people living in opposition constituencies were discriminated against in the distribution of relief while the ruling AINRC candidate’s constituencies were favoured. He said that as much as Rs 10,000 was given per damaged house, while for the same scale of damage in opposition constituencies beneficiaries were given only Rs 3000 per unit. He said that Central government had not discriminated between Congress ruled states and other parties ruled states. It had given a Central assistance of Rs 397 crore to the AINRC government in the current year as compared to Rs 150 crore during the previous year when Congress government was in power, which is 25 per cent more. Refuting AINRC General secretary V Bhalan’s charge that officials were favouring the Congress in certain constituencies, he said that a white paper detailing all categories of assistance, beneficiaries and quantum of distribution constituency-wise would bring out the facts. If officials were faltering, the government in power could tell them to do it the right way without discrimination, instead of levelling charges, he said.
