BANGALORE: Lokayukta Justice Santosh Hegde inaugurated the geriatric facility at Bangalore Baptist Hospital on Thursday. This facility will provide medical and nursing care to elderly patients focusing on rehabilitation so that the quality of their life may be improved. Justice Hegde emphasised the relevance of such initiatives in the urban community. He appreciated the commitment of the hospital in addressing the special needs of elderly patients by establishing an exclusive geriatric set up. “This facility will cater to the elderly patients requiring short term stay in an environment specially designed to address their safety and unique needs”, said Dr Alexander Thomas, director (CEO) of the hospital. The Hospital also unveiled the country’s first Lead Clinic with full fledged services towards diagnosing and treating lead poisoning. Dr Chandy Abraham, deputy director of the hospital, acknowledged the technical assistance and support of National Referral Centre for Lead Poisoning in India towards this cause. “Lead poisoning is mainly caused due to lead coming from various sources such as lead-based industrial pollution apart from lead in paints used in children’s toys and several alternate medicines that people use”, said Dr Venkatesh Thuppil, principal advisor to NRCLPI. This initiative will also focus on creating awareness amongst general public, industry and educational institutions by promoting preventive measures.
