Heavy firing broke out in Manipur’s Moreh district after an armed miscreant launched an attack on the Manipur Police commandos within their barracks in the region. The assault left seven persons injured, including four Manipur Police personnel and one BSF Jawan.

In a swift response, authorities facilitated the airlifting of the injured personnel to Imphal for medical treatment. They are currently under care at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS).

However, the BSF personnel injured in the incident is in a critical condition.

This comes just a day after three people were shot dead and five others were injured by armed men in Thoubal district’s Lilong area.

Soon after the incident, curfew was imposed across Manipur’s valley districts – Thoubal, Imphal East, Kakching and Bishnupur districts.

Unidentified gunmen arrived in camouflage attire in the Lilong Chingjao area, and opened fire targeting locals, news agency PTI quoted officials as saying.

Authorities were said to be actively investigating the situation, and residents were urged to firmly stick to the curfew norms for their safety.

Following the firing, Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh assured people that the culprits would be tracked down soon.

In a video message, the CM said, “We do not take this incident lightly. Manipur police have been pressed into action to nab the culprits. I appeal to the people, particularly from Lilong, to refrain from resorting to any form of violence. I assure you we will take stringent actions against the culprits as per law. Please cooperate with the government.”

Last year more than 170 people were killed and 1,108 others were injured in the ethnic violence that broke out in the state in May, 2023.

The violence erupted when a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
