New Delhi The Mayawati government got a big relief from the Supreme Court in the Noida park case when the apex court allowed construction but laid down the condition that 'pucca' (permanent) construction in the park area should not exceed more than 25 per cent of the total land area.
The court observed that Noida park project was not on a forest area but imposed the conditions because of its proximity to Okhla Bird Sanctuary. The court also set up a monitoring committee comprising of one member from CEC, one from Ministry of Environment and Forest and the Chairman of Noida Authority.
The apex court, acting on a petition, had halted the construction in the Rs 650 crore park citing violation of environmental norms and its proximity to the Okhla Bird Sanctuary.
An adamant UP government had initially contested the petition refuting claims of no environmental violation.
However, it had recently softened its stand and said that Noida authorities were ready to reduce the concrete area of the park where statues and memorials of Dalit leaders have been installed. It had also promised to take adequate steps to restore the ecological balance in the area.
