NAGERCOIL: A sand laden lorry smuggling sand to Kerala through Kanyakumari district tried to run over a police inspector, who was on a regular vehicle check during midnight near Thuckalay in Nagercoil district on Thursday.Around 1.30 am on Thursday, Thuckalay police inspector Magendran along with a team of policemen, was on a usual vehicle check at Iraviputhoorkadai on the Thiruvananthapuram-Nagercoil highway near Thuckalay. “We signaled two sand laden lorries going to the neighbouring Kerala to stop, but they came near us as though slowing down the vehicle but instead, tried to run over us. Luckily, we escaped,” said inspector Magendran. “At once, we alerted all the check posts in the district and after chasing the lorries for 20 km, we intercepted them near Padanthalumoodu check post,” the inspector added.After stopping the lorries, the drivers and cleaners in the two lorries fled the scene. “Cases under Sections 147 and 307 for unlawful assembly and attempt to murder as well as under the Mines and Minerals Act were registered at Thuckalay police station against eight persons, including the lorry owner, driver and others in the vehicle,” added the inspector.Further investigations are going on in connection with the case.
