Have you ever seen the Baluchari sarees from Bishnupur or the handloom textiles from Rajgram? With Durga Puja on the horizon, there’s a special saree called the Reverse Kantha Stitch in the offering. The term ‘reverse’ has a unique explanation. Creating these sarees takes between one to three months. They are entirely handmade, without any modern technology. The intricate designs are brought to life through manual effort, artistic dedication, and hard work. The trending saree for Durga Puja, the Reverse Kantha Stitch, is being crafted in Beliatore, Bankura. This saree is made by Kaveri Banerjee, with help from numerous young women and ladies striving for self-reliance.

So, why is it called reverse? To explain this, imagine you draw a flower on a white sheet of paper. Instead of colouring the flower, you colour the part of the paper around the flower. Reverse Kantha Stitch works similarly. An artist sketches various designs on the fabric, and then the outer parts of the design are stitched, leaving the interior of the design unstitched. This process is time-consuming, taking one to three months to complete a single saree, depending on the number of people working on it.

Kaveri Banerjee, a sewing expert and master trainer, says, “I am currently training twenty women, who work on Reverse Kantha Stitch. The price of the saree depends on the labour, starting at a minimum of Rs 3,000.” Besides Reverse Kantha sarees, Kaveri Banerjee also makes other garments like kurtis and various other clothes. She sells these products at various government fairs. Despite high demand, she faces challenges in meeting supply because the number of women stitching these sarees is decreasing. She began this work to guide women towards self-reliance.

Recently, they received an order worth Rs 40,000. By selling these unique sarees, the women of Bankura are finding their way towards self-reliance. Bankura and Bishnupur are renowned for their artistic history and heritage. The sarees from Bankura Bishnupur are especially popular.
