KOCHI: Considering the difficulties of the public due to the lack of rest rooms in the city, the Corporation will launch the first phase of the project for the construction of public toilets here.Initially, three eco-friendly readymade toilets will be constructed at the major spots in the city. The Corporation’s move is based on the report on safety of women in the city, submitted by the Centre for Gender Development and Ecology (CGDE) the other day, which cited that the lack of public toilets is causing difficulties for women. The work of public toilets at Ernakulam Town Hall, Boat Jetty and Kaloor Bus Station will begin this week. The toilets will be constructed by Aluva-based agency - Forest Industries Travancore (FIT). “It will be an advanced e-toilet system. The doors of the e-toilet will open only when coins are put in a box fixed at its entrance. After each use, the system cleans the toilet automatically. It will be open for next use only after the machine automatically cleans up the toilet,” said a top official with the Corporation. The civic administrators have been discussing the proposals for setting up the toilets for quite some time, but the project could not be launched owing to the difference of opinion on the mode of implementation. The delay in implementing the project had led to widespread criticism and public pressure had mounted on the Corporation authorities as the absence of public toilets in the city was causing hardships to the public, especially the floating population which comes to the city every day. The report submitted by the CGDE had also recommended to the civic body to find a solution to the issue.
