Srinagar: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday said a number of schemes have been initiated for rehabiliation of orphans and families affected by militancy.

''We have initiated a number of schemes for the rehabilitation of orphans, who were victims of terrorism. Such schemes must be extended to all orphans who will need help in building for themselves a life free from violence and perceived revenge, as upright citizens of this great state (J&K) and India,'' Dr Singh said.

He said a number of national-level NGOs have been involved in this field since 1994, of which the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation with its 'Project Impact' was the first.

Local NGOs have also joined in this endeavour, setting up orphanages and schools, he added.

''I assure you that this is an area where we can all work together in ensuring we provide succour and relief to all destitutes widows and orphans of any person killed in violence in the state,'' Dr Singh said.

''This will be our surest and immediate contribution to the peace and prosperity we all crave. I will urge the Home Minister and the state government to work out a credible mechanism for support of such families,'' the Prime Minister added.
