Bharuch (Uttar Pradesh): One of the absconding accused in the Akshardham temple attack case was arrested on Sunday by the district's special operations group (SOG) from the Tankaria village here, police said.
Majid Patel, accused of funding the terror attack on the temple with Hawala money from outside India, was arrested this evening from Tankaria village, they said.
About 34 people were killed and another 81 injured, when two Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorists opened fire with automatic guns and lobbed hand grenades inside the Akshardham temple in the state capital of Gandhinagar in September 2002.
Patel has been absconding since 2002 and has been charged under Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA).
Police said that the interrogation of the accused is on and no more information could be divulged now.
Three persons have been sentenced to death in the case relating to the attack on the Akshardham temple by a designated POTA court here. Imprisonment ranging from five years to life was also awarded to three others.
Police had declared 26 others involved in the conspiracy as absconders. Majid Patel was one of them.
Those convicted by the POTA court have filed an appeal in the Gujarat High Court, which is pending for further orders, defence lawyer K G Sheikh said.
