Kathmandu: A Parliamentary committee in Nepal is all set to grill 84 journalists, who had allegedly taken money to support the royal regime during King Gyanendra's 14-month direct rule.
Parliament's Public Accounts Committee has decided to summon 84 journalists, according to an official at the Ministry of Information and Communication.
These scribes had allegedly taken the money distributed by the royal government to support the King's direct rule.
"We will call them after recording the statements of the former ministers and staffers," said PAC Chairman Chitra Bahadur K C.
The PAC has also decided to interrogate former Information and Communication Ministers Shrish Shumsher Rana and Tanka Dhakal and then Communication Secretary Kumar Poudyal on Sunday.
The committee would summon them for their alleged distribution of funds under an advertisement policy and abuse of the state coffers to suppress the popular pro-democracy movement.
"We have asked the Communication Ministry to submit all the documents related with the misuse of funds during the Royal regime," the PAC Chairman said.
The 84 journalists, who allegedly received money from the Royal regime to write in its support, would be summoned in turns for interrogation, he said. However, 14 of the journalists have denied the allegations against them.
The Communication Ministry has asked the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority to look into the cases of these journalists and also verify their signatures for the purpose of investigation.
