Mumbai: The Metropolitan Regional Development Authority of Mumbai has proposed to construct 15 new flyovers all over the city at a cost of Rs 300 crore.
The flyover project scheduled to start in October, is expected to solve the commutation problem faced by Mumbaikars. The project will take around 12 to 15 months to get completed, say MRDAM officials.
"We plan to build flyovers at important junctions so that the journey from town to the suburbs will be a signal free corridor thus reducing the commuting time," Metropolitan Commissioner T Chandrashekhar says.
Mumbaikars are looking forward to this project as presently, it takes several hours to cover the distance between north Mumbai and South Mumbai.
"It is great step to solve Mumbai’s transportation problem. It will be good to have flyovers," Mumbai resident Chintan Shah says.
The proposed flyovers have been planned on two major roads - the Western Express Highway and the Eastern Express Highway that connects the island city to the suburbs.
On the western suburbs (starting from Dahisar towards Bandra) new flyovers will be constructed at the following junctions:
- Dahisar (linking Mira Road to Main Link Road )
- Thakur Complex at Kandivli
- Times of India press junction at Kandivli
- Dindoshi at Goregaon
- Barfiwala lane at Andheri
- Santacruz Airport junction
- Kherwadi
On the eastern suburbs (from Mulund to JJ Flyover) new flyovers will be constructed at:
- Navghar at Mulund
- Priyadarshini at RCF junction
- Sion Hospital
- King's circle
- Bharatmata
- Hindmata
- Lalbaug
- Sion flyover will be doubled from three lanes to six lanes with five new flyways.
