Severe heatwave conditions are likely to continue over Eastern India including West Bengal and Odisha and south Indian states like Karnataka and Telangana over the upcoming five days, the weather department said on Tuesday.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday warned of heatwave to severe heatwave conditions in parts of West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh during the next five days.
It has issued a red warning for West Bengal and Odisha and an orange alert for Bihar and parts of Karnataka.
Meanwhile, the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) has issued a series of animated shorts in Kannada advising people of appropriate measures to take during extreme temperatures to keep oneself safe.
The meteorological department has also issued a heatwave alert for Jharkhand’s Kolhan, Santhal, and North Chotanagpur divisions until April 29.
Heatwave Alert in Mumbai
- Amidst a yellow alert in the city, another heatwave alert has been raised for Mumbai on Sunday, the weather office noted. The city will witness another hot weekend as temperatures are likely to go up to 38 degrees Celsius on Saturday.
- The IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 34.2 degrees Celsius on Wednesday whereas the Colaba observatory registered a maximum temperature of 32.3 degrees.
- A heatwave alert has also been issued for Maharashtra’s Thane, Raigad districts from April 27 to 29. IMD scientist Sushma Nair on Wednesday said there is an anti-cyclonic circulation over Thane, Raigad and parts of Mumbai which will lead to a rise in temperature.
Delhi, UP & Arunachal Pradesh, Assam To Receive Rains
- Meanwhile, states in Northern India like Punjab, Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and states in western India including Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh are likely to receive rainfall accompanied with thunderstorms between April 24 and 27.
- On the other hand, Northeast India, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya is likely to witness heavy rainfall from April 24 to 28.
- Amid the rainy weather, the Lower Dibang Valley district of Arunachal has issued certain pre monsoon advisories. The authorities have advised to avoid travelling during night time and to also stay away from disaster prone areas during this time. A list of emergency contact numbers have also been provided for assistance.
Heatwave To Impact School, Poll Timings in Bengal & Northeast
- The severe weather conditions in the southern and western districts of West Bengal, caused by dry westerly winds and strong solar insolation, have caused the state government to reschedule summer holidays in schools run or aided by it, while many private educational institutions have either switched to online classes or changed their timings.
- The Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday extended the poll timings by two hours in some assembly segments in four parliamentary constituencies of Bihar for enhanced voter participation amid the heatwave. According to a notification, the poll timing in Banka, Madhepura, Khagaria and Munger Lok Sabha constituencies was from 7 am to 4 pm.
- With Tripura reeling under heatwave conditions, the government ordered that all schools in the state will remain closed from April 24 to 27, an official said on Wednesday.
- Odisha reeled under severe heatwave conditions on Thursday with state capital Bhubaneswar recording 41 degrees Celsius at 11.30 am.
