KOCHI: Nowadays, a CT or an MRI scan is one of the most expensive and, more often than not, a compulsory means to get diseases diagnosed, regardless of their severity. Aiming to facilitate scans without the fear of burning a hole in one’s pockets, the Ernakulam General Hospital has come up with an earnest initiative: MRI scanning at just `1,500. The facility is being set up  with the initiative of Rajya Sabha MP P Rajeev, in conjunction with the Cochin Shipyard Limited. In addition to the `1.5 crore from his MP fund, Kapila Vatsyayanan, a nominated MP whose term in the Rajya Sabha will end this month, has also joined hands with Rajeev by allotting  `1.5 crore from her MP fund as well.“Currently, no government hospitals in Ernakulam district has MRI scanning facility. Therefore, patients are forced to depend on private scanning centres and hospitals who charge an exorbitant `10,000 to `60,000 per scan,” Rajeev said.“We hope the centre will be functional within six months. Tenders will be floated soon,” he added. The centre would be managed by a committee with the MP as chairman and the District Collector as working chairman, along with the hospital Superintendent and a number of peoples’ representatives as members.
