Mumbai: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi used the anti-terrorism rally organised by BJP in the city as an opportunity to attack the Prime Minister for refusing to bring back Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA).
“The Prime Minister should know that despite POTA, the Akshardham incident happened," Modi said.
"Yet, because of POTA, people guilty for Akshardham were sentenced to death,” he added.
“In Mumbai, we have been fighting the case for 14 years, without a clue of who is guilty,” he said.
Modi visited the city at a time when Mumbai was most vulnerable and just about recovering from the serial terror attacks.
He met the victims of last Tuesday's blasts before addressing the anti-terrorism rally organised by the local Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership at the Shanmukhananda Hall in Central Mumbai.
The Samajwadi Party (SP) had demanded a ban on Modi's entry in the city.
Meanwhile, the opposition Shiv Sena and BJP shouted slogans, demanding the arrest of SP MP Abu Asim Azmi who has opposed Modi's rally.
Realising the volatility of the situation, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister, R R Patil had warned that action would be taken if Modi made any "objectionable" statements.
