MF Husain's 'Sixth Seal' on sale in London
An important work by Raza from his Paris period is Rue des Fosses St Jaques, estimated around 500,000 pound.

London: Two significant paintings of legends MF Husain and SH Raza will be the highlights of a Sotheby's auction here next week that is expected to fetch in excess of 2.8 million pounds.

Sotheby's sale of South Asian Modern and Contemporary Art on May 31 Comprises 62 lots, several with unprecedented provenance.

Raza's 'Bindu', with an estimate of 400,000-600,000 pounds, is an important work executed in 1985 and is one of the earliest large depictions of the Bindu by the artist.

Another important work by Raza from his Paris period is Rue des Fosses St Jaques, an oil on canvas estimated at 300,000-500,000 pounds.

Husain's 'The Sixth Seal', estimated at 400,000-500,000 pounds, exemplifies the eclectic balance between his cubist modern style of painting and Indian traditional sensibility and subject matter.

Illustrated is Jehangir Sabavala's oil on canvas 'The Tree', which is estimated at 65,000-75,000 pounds. This painting is part of the Tungabhadra landscapes that were painted in 1965 following a visit by the Sabavalas to south India.

Another highlight is Manjit Bawa's Untitled estimated at 100,000-150,000 pounds.

The sale will also include Subodh Gupta's 'Hungry God' (300,000-400,000 pounds) and Untitled (120,000-180,000 pounds) and two early oil works by F N Souza.
