New Delhi: The Union government on Thursday declared the first list of 20 smart cities , which were selected through a process of competition. The first batch of the cities included a metro like Chennai, and smaller cities like Pune, Udaipur and Bhubaneswar.
Madhya Pradesh emerged as the biggest beneficiary with three places from the state finding place in the list of the first 20 smart cities. Jabalpur, Indore and state capital Bhopal were the cities selected from Madhya Pradesh.
Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu were other major beneficiaries of the smart city project with 2 cities from each state in the top 20 list.
While Solapur and Pune from Maharashtra made it to the top 20, Jaipur and Udaipur from Rajasthan also featured in the list. The entrants from Gujarat were Ahmedabad and Surat.
Visakhapatnam and a relatively smaller city, Kakinada, from Andhra Pradesh also bagged spot among the first 20 smart cities. From Karnataka, Davangere and Belgaum emerged as part of the first batch of smart cities. Tamil Nadu capital Chennai and Coimbatore also featured in the list.
Apart from these, one city each from Kerala, Delhi, Assam, Punjab and Odisha booked their berth in the race for smart cities. While it's Bhubaneswar from Odisha, it's Kochi from Kerala, Guwahati from Assam, Ludhiana from Punjab and New Delhi Municipal Council from Delhi.
