CHENNAI: The city and its suburbs can expect load shedding, on a rotation basis,  for two hours for 10 days beginning Monday (June 27 to July 7). This is being done to provide overhead line connectivity to the TNEB-NTPC joint venture thermal power project at Vallur. At present, one-hour of load shedding is in vogue in the city and its suburbs. On June 19, TANGEDCO announced a four- hour load shedding but, it was postponed the next day after intervention from the State government.“The common man would be very affected if he were to face a four-hour cut. Hence, the Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa convened a meeting on Friday to find ways to mitigate hardship to the people,” an official release said.Following deliberations, Jayalalithaa advised officials to confine the power cut to two hours for 10 days. The extra hours of load shedding cut would be on June 28 and July 6. Areas that undergo power cuts during day would not face any outage at night. No place would be subjected to power cut for more than one time at night, the State government press release clarified. What is happening?A multi-circuit overhead line (400 KV) is being set up linking the upcoming Vallur thermal plant with the Nellore-Alamathy-Sriperumbudur 400 KV double circuit transmission line. The link would provide the ‘start up power’ to the plant and it is essential to commence generation. Once the plant is ready, the line would transmit the power produced at the Vallur facility to the grid.
