A significant case of negligence has emerged in Bihar’s Gaya district, where the Income Tax Department has sent a notice of over Rs 2 crore to a labourer, who’s monthly income is just Rs 10,000. The family of the worker is now deeply concerned about the situation.

The notice, amounting to Rs 2 crore, was sent to Rajiv Kumar Verma, a resident of the Kotwali Police Station Area in Gaya, leaving his family shocked and distressed. According to reports, Rajiv has been visiting the Income Tax Department office continuously for the past four days, but the issue remains unresolved.

Rajiv Kumar said that even if he worked as a labourer for his entire life, he would still never be able to earn such a large amount of money.

He said that on January 22, 2015, he made a fixed deposit of Rs 2 lakh at Corporation Bank in Gaya branch, but withdrew it before maturity on August 16, 2016.

When he approached the Income Tax Department, he was advised to file an appeal, as the error might be technical. He was further informed that if the issue is found to be a mistake, it could be rectified through the appeal process.

Rajiv has been asked to pay Rs 67 lakh within two days as a penalty. He expressed his confusion about the situation stating, “I don’t even know what income tax is, how a person earning Rs 10,000 per month could file a return.”
