Krishna River Basin: Historical Significance And Current Role In Agriculture And Industry
In Hindu mythology, the Krishna River is considered to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

The Krishna River system is one of the most important river basins in peninsular India, stretching for around 1,400 kilometres (870 mi) through the west and south of the country. Its importance lies in the fact that it supplies agriculture, industries and millions of people in several states. Let’s go into the details with the origin, course, dams, projects and tributaries of the Krishna River.

In Hindu mythology, the Krishna River is considered to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, created by a curse placed by Savitri (also known as Saraswati) on the Trimurtis. It is revered as one of the holy rivers of India, similar to the Ganga and Yamuna rivers and is named after Lord Krishna. Puranic texts suggest that a ritual bath in the Krishna River can purify people of their past sins and impurities, highlighting its importance for spiritual purification.

Krishna devotees also believe that he spent a large part of his life on the banks of the Krishna River. Krishna is said to have performed numerous divine miracles on the banks of the Krishna River. These miraculous feats include raising the Govardhan Hill, defeating the demon Bakasura and freeing the serpent Kaliya from its malevolent influence.

Historically, the Krishna River basin was home to several ancient civilizations, including the Vedic period and the Satavahana, Vijayanagara and Kakatiya empires. These civilizations flourished on the banks of the river and used its waters for agriculture, trade and religious rituals.

The Krishna River is bounded by the Balaghat range to the north, the Eastern Ghats to the south and east and the Western Ghats to the west. The total length of the river from its source to its mouth in the Bay of Bengal is 1,400 km.

The central part of the basin is covered with agricultural land to the extent of 75.86 per cent.
