The Kolkata Police on Sunday held a 19-year-old student for posting on her social media handle “provocative, offensive comments” and “death threat” against West Bengal Chief Minister (CM) and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee in the wake of the rape-murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital.
A section of netizens, including TMC leaders, had flagged the Instagram posts, which also mentioned Indira Gandhi, to police, requesting action. The police statement said, “A complaint was received that the accused person had uploaded three Instagram stories related to the recent incident at R.G. Kar Hospital disclosing the picture and identity of the victim, which is an offense…At the same time, the accused also shared two stories against Hon’ble C.M. of West Bengal containing offensive comments and death threat. The posts were provocative and could create social unrest anytime and promote hatred among community.”
Initial reports said she was a Class 12 student, while some reports suggested that she was second-year B Com student. The girl will be produced in court on Monday. Her family and entire locality is in shock. A neighbour told News18: “She is a kid, she did this without understanding. It was a mistake. They are sorry for it. We hope the child is released soon.”
The family is taking legal opinion on getting bail. “They are good people, we hope the child gets bail,” other neighbours said.

So far, notices have been issued to around 1,000 people for spreading misinformation and revealing the identity of the victim in the RG Kar case.
Two doctors — Kunal Sarkar and Subarna Goswami — have also been summoned for posting misinformation. They will be visiting police headquarters, amid a doctors’ rally.
TMC leader Kunal Ghosh, who was among those who flagged the post, wrote on X: “The police are taking action only when protestors post, stop this nonsense. If you think you will protest, do it a hundred times in proper language and logic. Do it a thousand times. But giving wrong information, distorted assumptions, fake audio, purposeful incitement posts, names and photos of the deceased, the police will warn you.”
While police sources say it is a crackdown on misinformation, many feel the action is directed at those posting against the government.
