New Delhi: Nine people lost their lives due to landslides and heavy rains in north Kerala over the past two days. In Iritty, Kannur district, the overflowing of the Pazhassi dam has been fixed, but a majority of the town is still submerged.
An assistant engineer attached to the Pazhassi dam was suspended for dereliction of duty after a department level enquiry was conducted.
On Tuesday, the dam overflowed causing panic among people. Things are said to be under control now. The water level has come down to around 22 meters (the full reservoir level is 26.52 metres).
Of the 16 shutters, only nine could be opened, and this had caused the floods in Iritty and surrounding areas.
A 72-member National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team is trying to open the remaining shutters of the dam.
Meanwhile, a seven-member Naval team is helping the relief and cleaning operations.
Meanwhile in Kozhikode, nine bodies were recovered from the landslide spot. The affected areas are limping back to normalcy. A special Cabinet meeting will be held on Thursday to assess the situation and decide compensation package.
