'Interim report on Godhra not ruled out'
The Godhra Commission has not ruled out on giving an interim report on the Sabarmati Express train carnage and the post-Godhra riots in 2002.

New Delhi: The Godhra Commission has not ruled out on giving an interim report on the Sabarmati Express train carnage and the post-Godhra riots in 2002.

"The Justice (retd) GT Nanavati and Justice (retd) KG Shah Commission enquiring the 2002 Gujarat riots has not ruled out on giving an interim report on the Godhra carnage," PTI quoted sources at the Commission as saying.

"The Commission will assess the requirement and look at the demand for it before deciding about interim report," they added.

The sources said the Commission has completed the hearing of the matter related to the burning of the S-6 coach of the Sabarmati Express train on February 27, 2002.

Fifty-nine people returning from Ayodhya on February 27, 2002 were killed inside the S-6 coach.

The sources said the commission was running behind schedule, as it had to take all the people along.

They clarified that the commission had decided to wrap up the hearing of riot cases of 11 districts of the state, which were least affected in 2002 by February this year but it will be able to do so at the end of this month.

The Commission has received 45,000 affidavits and it takes a lot of time to go through them, the sources said adding 50 per cent of these are related to riot compensation.

The Godhra Commission has not fixed the time frame of giving its final report.

"The commission thinks that there must be something very important related to national security in those letters and that being the reason the central government has denied to give it to the commission," the sources added.

A public hearing of riot victims of Dang, Valsad, Surat, Navsari, Narmada, Surendranagar, Porbandar, Jamnagar, Kutch, Amreli and Rajkot district was held at the commission on Monday.

However, not a single person from these districts had come to depose before the commission on Monday. These district were the least affected during the 2002 riots.
