BERHAMPUR: Former chief executive officer (CEO) of Southco, Tapan Kumar Mishra, allegedly attempted suicide on Thursday by connecting a live wire to a transformer near his residence at Baikunthanagar here.An unconscious Mishra was rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital and later shifted to a private hospital in Visakhapatnam with 30 per cent burns.In his statement to the police at MKCGMCH, Mishra alleged that unable to tolerate the repeated humiliation meted out to him by his rivals, he decided to end his life. Police seized his suicide note wherein he had named some of the Southco officials.The police has registered a attempt to suicide case and investigation into the allegations levelled by Mishra has begun.Mishra’s extreme act comes nearly a week after the anti-corruption sleuths raided his houses at different places in the State following charges of amassing unaccounted wealth levelled against him. The sleuths also unearthed property worth more than Rs 1.2 crore.This was not the first time his house was raided. In October his farmhouse, registered under his wife’s name, on the outskirts of the city and his residence in the city, were raided by Southco vigilance sleuths.During the raid the electric meters were found tampered with and a case was registered against his wife. To evade arrest, his wife approached the High Court and as per the HC direction surrendered before a local court for a bail.Mishra was appointed CEO after serving three years as vice-president of Southco. While still in CEO post some ministers and legislators recommended that his tenure be extended but it was turned down by the Reliance. Mishra, however, claimed to have shown the property papers to income tax officials.
