Tirunelveli district has astonished many by achieving success in the 12th class public examination, despite the challenges posed by the floods resulting from heavy rains in the southern regions. Last December, the Tirunelveli district experienced severe rainfall, leading to extensive flood damage throughout the area. Dams such as Tirunelveli, Papanasam, and Manimuthar released thousands of cubic feet of water into the Thamirabarani River. Particularly noteworthy was the discharge of approximately one lakh cubic feet of water into the Thamirabarani River within a single day, resulting in significant flood damage to both the urban and suburban areas of the district.
Communities residing along the Thamirabarani River, including Kokkirakulam, Vannarappettai, Sudtamalli, Melapalayam, Junction, Vodiyarpatti, Manimurtheeswaram, Thachanallur, among others, bore the brunt of severe flood damage. The majority of residences lining the riverbanks were completely demolished, greatly impacting the residents. Thousands of homes were inundated by the flooding. Of particular concern was the loss of books belonging to students, along with their Aadhaar cards and other essential documents.
The heavy rains in the southern districts prompted calls from various quarters to postpone the public examinations, given the significant disruption to the education of children who had lost their homes. However, despite these challenges, the recent release of the 12th-class general examination results has surprised many. Hari Rama, the assistant to the primary education officer, highlighted the efforts made by the district administration to address the flood situation and the subsequent success of the students. He mentioned, “The district primary education office was significantly affected by the flood. The office sustained considerable damage, with records being submerged and the premises partially flooded,” he said.
A team of 4 Joint Directors under the leadership of School Education Secretary Kumaraguruparan conducted a 3-day action trip to Tirunelveli and engaged in rescue work. In almost 20 days, they recovered all the flooded buildings, a record. Then books were given to the students as the half-yearly examination was held. “We advised the teachers to be sure that the result should not be affected by the flood. Due to this, Tirunelveli district has come 8th in Tamil Nadu and 1st in South Tamil Nadu in terms of 12th class pass percentage,” he said.
