New Delhi: The awards season is upon us and this is the time when the best of Indian cinema is judged, reviewed rewarded for entertaining us in the past year. 2013 has seen a mixed bag of films comprising both popular and art house cinema. In our maiden initiative, we have selected nominees in various popular categories and will let our readers decide the outcome. It is a month long poll, so go ahead and vote for your favourite performers of 2013.
They aren't given much credit but actors who play the supporting roles in films provide a backbone to the story. Most of the time, the lead characters hog the limelight but these actors still manage to turn heads with their strinking, hatke performances.
Our pick of nominees for the Best Supporting Actor is an interesting mix of some newcomers, some theatre actors and some well known faces. Each one managed to create an impact with their and in some cases outshine the main lead.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui (The Lunchbox): 2013 was completely Nawazuddin Siddiqui's year as all his films fetched good response at the Box Office and won him laurels from critics as well as the masses. The versatile actor played a rookie accountant in Ritesh Batra's 'The Lunchbox' a friendly guy-next-door who manages to befriend with the old grumpy Saajan Fernandez played by Irrfan Khan. A role that was easy to play because it was run of the mill but difficult due to its simplicity.
Saqib Saleem (Bombay Talkies): He already won our heart with his hilarious, goofy act in 'Mere Dad Ki Maruti' but it was as the cheeky intern in a Media house in Karan Johar's story in 'Bombay Talkies' that Saqib Saleem made his mark as an actor this year. As the homosexual intern who manages to disrupt a peaceful marriage, Saleem made the complex character his own and that for a new actor with only two films in a resume is admirable.
Zeeshan Ayub (Raanjhanaa): Having a strong foothold in theater circuit helped Zeeshan Ayub to adapt to Benarasi taste in Anand L Rai's 'Raanjhanaa'. The actor played Dhanush's best friend in the film but managed to gain a new set of fans thanks to his bindaas act and some amazing dialogues and comic timing.
Varun Sharma (Fukrey): It is the eagerness and zeal with which Varun Sharma gets familiar with the college life that makes his character so engaging. In 'Fukrey' he shows he has all the qualities to have movie buffs rolling at the aisles.
Prithviraj (Aurangzeb): Silent, restraint characters have become Prithviraj's alter egos. The Malayalam superstar made his Bollywood debut with 'Aiyyaa' and then showed a very different aspect of his self in 'Aurangzeb'. His character was not all white or all black but good shade of grey where he played a Gurgaon cop who has to choose between the truth and responsibilities that he has towards his family.####
