HYDERABAD: Residents of the twin cities welcomed the first set of monsoon showers, which brought relief from the oppressive heat of summer on Friday. Arun Marapatla (28), an employee in a management institute and his friend Eswar Saladi, working in a private firm, were both thrilled to enjoy bike rides in the rains from Jubilee Hills to Shamshabad via Outer Ring road. "We were eagerly waiting for the monsoons. It feels great to go a long ride on bikes in the first showers. We keep going on such rides every time the monsoon rains hit the city since the past few years," said a visibly drenched but happy Eswar Saladi. While people experienced the initial rains sitting on balcony sipping a hot cup of tea, amidst sounds of raindrops falling on the roof, enthusiastic kids decided to come out from their homes holding umbrellas, while splashing around water which had collected on the streets in Film Nagar. According to the Meteorological department, there was heavy rainfall  in all suburban localities like Shamshabad, Manikonda, Rajendranagar, Tolichowki, Kompalli and Kondapur. Posh localities such as Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hils, Madhapur and other areas in the city also received some rainfall. MeT officials said 1 mm rainfall was reported from the city, the heavy downpour in other areas brought the mercury to a bearable level of 35 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the city administration was caught unawares by onset of monsoons as they are not yet ready with remedial measures to prevent water-logging. Due to light showers, smooth traffic movement was also affected, with traffic coming to standstill on the stretch from Begumpet to Secunderabad, at the Khairatabad junction, Punjagutta, Telugutalli flyover and Nagarjuna circle.
