HC halts playground work in park

BANGALORE: The High Court on Friday  directed the BBMP not to convert the park at Vyalikaval near Malleswaram into a basketball and tennis court. The court gave this direction while hearing a PIL filed seeking action against the civic body for converting the park into a playground.Petitioner Jyothi Bhat stated that the  BBMP is building a basketball and tennis court in the park. There are slum people around and building these type of playgrounds will not help them and it is not a common man’s play, she contended saying that a lot of trees have to be cut to construct the playground.The BBMP counsel argued that the civic body has already spent `80 lakh for the construction of basketball and tennis court and the entire money will be wasted if it is cancelled. A Division Bench headed by Chief Justice Vikramajit Sen directed to stop the construction work and plant saplings in the park.
