MYSORE: Google Maps have been at the receiving end from security officials across the world, for their ease of information provision; however, the same tool was instrumental in cracking the case of rape of an Australian national. The software enabled zeroing in on the exact location of the lodge in which the foreigner was raped. It is to be noted that the efforts of Mysore Police teams led by DCP Basavaraj Malagatti resulted in the arrest of the culprits within 10 hours after the victim filed a complaint. The victim, while sharing her views with DCP Basavaraj Malagatthi, appreciated the police for their commendable job. “In Australia, the police do not bother about such incidents and they cannot bring the culprits behind bars as the Mysore police have done.” When she met DCP Malagatthi to file a complaint, he asked her to narrate the sequence of events and describe the place where the incident took place. When she was unable to do so, Malagatthi offered her his laptop. Within a few minutes, the victim was able to identify the place, Irish Lodge, using Google Maps.Thereafter, the police teams went after the culprits to arrest them.Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police Sunil Agarwal commended DCP Malagatthi and Inspectors Yashavanth Kumar and S R Rao for nabbing the culprits, as it was a major challenge to protect the image of India internationally.Speaking to Express, Malagatthi said: “She did not have the faintest idea of an Indian breakfast. However, she visited a hotel and enquired with the hotel owner over which food is better from the nutritional point of view.” It was then that the accused asked her to take idli-vada and obtained her mobile numbers and established contact, the DCP elucidated.
