All cancer patients, regardless of their income, will be provided free treatment for all forms of the radio-therapy, including Cobalt, Linear Accelerator and Brachy Therapy, according to the JIPMER authorities.
JIPMER has been providing free treatment to the poor patients ever since its inception in 1964.
While charges could have been levied for patients with higher income, a mechanism could not be enforced because of inability to check the declared income of the patients.
In 1990, JIPMER introduced charges for in-patients even in general wards for tests and investigations for those who have a declared monthly income of Rs 2,500 and above and this practice is being followed to this day.
JIPMER continued to provide free treatment even after it was converted into an institute of national importance by an Act of Parliament. Presently, all the patients, rich or poor, get most of the lab investigations, ECG, ultrasound, TMT etc at totally free of cost. This present status remains unchanged.
With the establishment and commissioning of several high-tech equipment involving huge maintenance costs and charges on the Isotopes, for diagnostic and therapeutic use, the standing committee of the institute gave directives for levying user charges of the tests and examinations, which have been introduced only on patients with a declared income of Rs 2,500 per month and above.
However, the cancer patients would be exempted and be given totally free treatment.
Thus there is no change in the existing policy of the institute before and after declaration as an institute of national importance, says JIPMER sources.
