Reigning Olympic champion Yvonne Boenisch and world champion Kye Sun-Hui were among a host of favourties to crash out of the women's -57kg judo tournament at the Beijing Games on Monday.
Boenisch over-committed herself in an attack on Italian Giulia Quintavalle and was countered with a slick foot-sweep (kosoto-gari) for a waza-ari (half point) score in the first round.
The favourite and four-time world champion Kye was the next to be shocked as she fell to France's twice European champion, in 2000 and 2006, Barbara Harel in the second round.
