European Grand Prix: No DRS in Valencia
This weekend's race will have only one DRS Zone after the FIA took the decision to remove the second area.

Valencia: Influenced by the ineffectiveness of the additional DRS zone in Valencia last year, the FIA has decided to remove the second area towards the Turn 17 hairpin at this weekend’s European Grand Prix.

In 2011, the FIA had introduced two zones – one from just before Turn 11 and the second just after the exit of Turn 14 down to Turn 17 – but the lack of overtaking action left fans and racers disappointed. There were only 27 passes – 22 of them assisted by DRS – which was the second poorest return in 2011.

This weekend’s race will see a single DRS zone located on the back stretch, covering the curving back section down to the right-left chicane and the best potential overtaking spot.

Paul Hembrey, the Pirelli tyre motorsport director, was quoted as saying by PlanetF1: "Valencia could not present a bigger contrast to the street circuits that have come before it: the track is faster and the temperatures higher, with plenty of energy going through the tyres. What it has in common with the others is the difficulty of overtaking, which will put the emphasis on qualifying.

"So we are expecting a fairly straightforward race, with either two or three stops depending on which tactics the teams use - although one team tried a one-stopper last year as well."
