BHUBANESWAR: In order to give a boost to the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) Adhaar project in the State, the Department of Posts has been roped in to undertake enrolment of citizens. The enrolment under UIDAI was launched in the Orissa Postal Circle on Tuesday by Chief Secretary Bijay Kumar Patnaik. According to Chief Post Master General, Orissa Circle, Hilda Abraham, the enrolment process was kicked off at the Bhubaneswar General Post office (GPO) and would gradually be extended to other post offices. In the first phase, 134 important post offices covering all the 30 districts have been identified as enrolment centres. The UIDAI will provide enrolled citizens with a unique 12 digit Adhaar number, which identifies them on the basis of their demographic information and biometrics. It would be an all-in-one identity proof creating an opportunity to address existing limitations in financial inclusion. Adhaar would help the poorer sections to avail of benefits under various welfare schemes. Once citizens enrol for Adhaar, service providers will no longer face the problems of going for repeated Know Your Customer (KYC) checks before providing services. They can also no longer deny services to people on account of identification documents. The citizens would also be spared the trouble of repeatedly providing identity through documents for every service from opening a bank account, obtaining a passport, driving licence to LPG connections.
