At a time when fuel prices are giving nightmares to motorists, a group of engineering students in the city has come up with a technology which can change the duration of each stroke in an internal combustion engine, thereby bringing down fuel consumption.
The students, belonging to Marian College of Engineering and Technology, claim that when compared to ordinary internal combustion engines, the new technology, which they have termed VSD (Variable stroke duration), allows greater power output in a maximum angle with an increase in volumetric and thermal efficiency.
‘’The duration of the four strokes is usually equal; but in this technology, we have changed the duration of each stroke in a way that power is spread in maximum angle to all sides. The duration of the suction stroke is increased and duration of power stroke is decreased,’’ said Pratap Kumar, one of the five students who were part of the project.
The VSD engine was developed by replacing the conventional slider crank mechanism used in internal combustion engines with a new mechanism which is capable of changing the duration of each stroke. It was developed on a single cylinder petrol engine. The technology can be used in both petrol and diesel engines.
The technology was developed as part of the final semester project of the college under the guidance of Kamal Krishna R, assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
The other students involved in the project were, Sajith Krishnan, Sanal Kumar, Stephin M and Vivek Raj, all belonging to the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
