New Delhi: The Delhi Traffic Police issued a total of 509 challans on New Year’s Eve for drunk driving, over 250 less compared to 2017.
Of 509, 147 were owners of the vehicles, while 362 were drivers. Last year, 543 drivers and 222 owners were booked, said Delhi Traffic Police. "Lesser number than last year may be due to greater awareness among people who now prefer to take a driver along or take a taxi," said Anil Mittal, ACP Traffic.
Delhi Police and traffic police had made elaborate arrangements for New Year celebrations in the city. Police personnel were deployed at all major points and barricades were placed where more footfall was expected for the celebration.
In Mumbai, police registered at least 455 cases of drunk driving in the early hours of New Year on January 1, an official said. As per a report compiled by the traffic police till 6am, at least 455 drivers were found driving drunk. Action like imposition of fine and compounding of driving licenses has been taken against them, the official said.
