From January 1, Delhi will witness the implementation of the ambitious odd and even number car scheme to check pollution. With just three days to go, the Delhi Police on Tuesday received the official notification from Delhi government in this regard. The notification contains the list of exemptions and also details about who can issue fines.
Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung has authorised the Delhi Police and Delhi government officers to issue challans of Rs 2000 against offenders. A trial run for the odd and even formula will be conducted on December 31.
The Delhi Police has sought some clarifications especially about the exemption to vehicles being used in medical emergencies. Commissioner BS Bassi will meet Transport Minister Gopal Rai at 6 pm on Tuesday to discuss the details. There are 25 categories of vehicles that are exempted from the scheme.
Meanwhile, there seems to be no end to the political tussle over the formula. Congress leader Manish Tewari tweeted asking Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to explain how he will fine the defaulters. "Arvind Kejriwal could you please enlighten people under what sections of Motor Vehicles Act would you challan an odd vehicle on an even day," said Tewari.
The Delhi Police Commissioner has maintained that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) volunteers will not be authorised to issue challans. He has also questioned the exemption made to the scheme.
The Delhi government is also distributing CNG stickers to vehicles at CNG pumps in the national capital to ensure that authentic CNG-run vehicles are plying on the roads. Government teams will conduct checks on CNG vehicles. The transport department has warned of serious action against those procuring fake CNG stickers.
