Concern over stir at Cochin Shipyard

KOCHI: Expressing concern over the strike by the workers of the contractors, the Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) on Friday said the stir was affecting the normal operations, including strategic naval projects, shipbuilding and ship repair work at the yard. The CSL also expressed fears that the strike may even affect the security of the nation.“The management has promised full support to any reasonable aspirations of the labourers, but the adamant attitude of the workers union is eluding a fair and amicable settlement affecting the reputation of the shipyard,” Kala V, Company Secretary said.The wage rates prevalent in the CSL and offered to the workers of the contractors were the best in the industry and the demand made by them were unsustainable and baseless, the Company Secretary said.Despite the best efforts of the Regional Labour Commissioner (Central), the CSL management and the contractors Federation, the union representing the workers of the contractors was making unreasonable, unjustified and exorbitant demands, she said.
