KOCHI: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will crown the champions of ‘Goal 2012’, the all-Kerala inter-collegiate football championship organised by The New Indian Express, in Kochi on Friday. Sree Kerala Varma College (SKVC), Thrissur, will receive the champions trophy from the Chief Minister at the grand valedictory function to be held at Hotel Casino at Willingdon Island at 7.15 p.m. Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi, who will be the guest of honour at the function, will present a cash award of `1 lakh to the winners. The New Indian Express Editorial Director Prabhu Chawla will also be present on the occasion. The New Indian Express will honour eight stalwarts of Kerala football - Olympian O Chandrasekharan, C C Jacob, M M Jacob, Xavier Pius, T K S Mani, T A Jafar, K P Williams and Rufus D’Souza - at the function. Union Minister of State for Food and Public Distribution K V Thomas will present the runners-up Trophy to Mar Athanasius College, Kothamangalam. Excise Minister K Babu will present a cheque of `50,000 to the runners up. The six individual awards to players will also be presented. K K Bharathan of SKVC has been adjudged the best player of the tournament while Faizal Rehman of the same college is the top scorer. Other individual awards will go to Ramesh N R of M A College (best goalkeeper), Mustafa Arafat of Nirmala College, Muvattupuzha, (best defender), Vibin S J of M A College (best midfielder) and Eldhos Sunny of Nirmala College (best forward). The souvenir and video of ‘Goal-2012’ will be released at the function. The all-Kerala inter-collegiate tournament, held at Maharaja’s College Ground from January 16 to 29, had 16 colleges from four universities in the state fighting it out. The tournament was held by dividing the colleges into four clusters.
