KOCHI: The city celebrated the 65th anniversary of Indian Independence on Monday.  Various government departments and organisations observed the Independence Day.Excise Minister K Babu hoisted the National Flag at Ernakulam Marine Drive at 8.30 am. Addressing the parade, the minister said that people should work together to handle the challenges being faced by the nation. "We should be vigilant against all anti-national activities which are a threat to the unity and solidarity of the country, "Excise Minister K Babu in his Independence Day message said. “The cultural diversity of India is what unites us. Our greatest achievement is that, braving all threats, we could maintain our democratic values throughout the history of independent India. During the past 64 years, India has carved its own place among other countries,” the minister said.The minister handed over the Chief Minister’s police medals announced during the Republic Day. Awards were given to SI P Mohanachandran (Cochin International Airport), Senior Civil Police Officer P A Payas (Varappuzha), R Vinod (Kochi City A R), C P Aneesh Kumar (City Traffic East Kochi City), T K Joshi (Angamaly station), G Harikumar (Chengamanad station) and Civil Police Officer Ushar Udayan (Kalamassery police station).The representative of Muvattupuzha Kavumkara TTV HS received the award for the education institution contributing maximum money to the Flag Day Fund for 2010. Cooperative Joint Registrar (General) office representative received the award in the same category for government offices.The award for best sea cadet in the male category was given to Darly while the award in the female category was given to Aiswarya.The minister also handed over awards to platoons which staged the best performance during the parade. District Armed Reserve Kochi City Police and NCC Senior Division Armed Wing won prizes in the armed units category. In the unarmed category, NCC Army Wing Junior Division (Girls) won the first prize. In the students police cadets category, Students Police Cadet third number platoon won the first prize and the Students Cadet platoon-4 won the second prize.Perumanoor CCPLM won the first prize in Scouts while Ernakulam St Teresa’s HS won the first prize in Guides. Ernakulam Government Girls HSS, Kacherippady St Antony’s HSS and Perumanoor CCPLM won the first three positions in the Junior Red Cross category. Ernakulam St Mary’s LPS, Ernakulam, St Teresa’s LPS and Chathyath LMCCG LPS won prizes in other categories.The Independence Day parade was led by Kochi Armed Reserve Police Reserve Inspector M V Paulose. The parade had seven armed wings, 31 unarmed wings and three band units. St Mary’s HS, Ernakulam, and St Antony’s HS, Kacherippady, and Ernakulam St Teresa’s HS won prizes. Minister K Babu who came to the parade ground at 8.25 am was received by District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth and City Police Commissioner Ajith Kumar. Mayor Tony Chammany, P T Thomas MP, MLAs Hibi Eden, Dominic Presentation, Anwar Sadath and Ludy Louis also attended the function.
