Chikunguniya Death Toll Rises to Six in Delhi
Doctors say that chikungunya is not a life-threatening disease in general, but in rare cases leads to complications that prove fatal, especially in children and old persons.

New Delhi: The menace of Chikunguniya continues in the national capital taking the death toll to Six. The Health Ministry has sought a detailed report from the Delhi government after chikungunya complications affected over 1000 people in the city.

"We have sought a detailed report from Delhi government (regarding chikungunya deaths) as to what has been the co-morbidity in these death cases and its details. There is no second opinion that death does not occur due to chikungunya and it does not become the cause of death. But still, we have sought a detailed report from the Delhi government. Whatever help and support is needed will be given," Health Minister JP Nadda said.

Doctors say that chikungunya is not a life-threatening disease in general, but in rare cases leads to complications that prove fatal, especially in children and old persons.

Attacking the Delhi government over this fiasco, Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry Kiran Bedi said, "There is no governance no administration. TVs are showing hospitals overflowing while minster is saying there is no problem. People are distressed, there is no accountability. I'm speaking as a Delhiite. The Delhi government needs to reach out to L-G and work together."

According to a municipal report released on Tuesday, at least 1,057 cases of this vector-borne disease have been recorded till September 10. However, hospitals in the city altogether are reporting much higher number.
