Chaos in Bengal's Barrackpore Over Law & Order; BJP Says 'Police Working on Mamata's Instructions'

The West Bengal Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) led by Sukanta Majumdar held a mega protest on Monday in Barrackpore against the Mamata Banerjee government over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. Police were seen using water cannons and lathi-charged some protesting BJP workers.

Sukanta Majumdar went to gherao the Barrackpur Commissioner’s office where the situation escalated as the protestors allegedly broke two barricades.

The situation lead to some alleged instances of stone pelting. However, the situation is now under control.

Speaking with reporters, Majumdar said “We did a protest outside the CP office. Police used water cannons and tear gas. They lathi-charged and even pelted stones.” He further called the West Bengal police as ‘Taliban Police’ who are working on the instructions of Mamata Banerjee.

“Women have been lathi-charged by policemen. Ashish Maurya is the police officer. We will go to the court against him,” he added.

Later, BJP workers and Majumdar sat for dharna in front of Titagarh Thana in Barrackpur as some of the workers were arrested by the police and others ‘mercilessly’ beaten up, said leader of the opposition the legislative assembly Suvendu Adhikari, adding that at least 6 workers have been hospitalised.

Meanwhile, chief Sukanta Majumdar believes that the Citizenship Amendment Act will be implemented before the Lok Sabha elections.

“Not aware of time frame but I believe CAA will be implemented before Lok Sabha polls,” quoted news agency, PTI as saying Majumdar.

His comments came after Union Minister Shantanu Thakur, in West Bengal, claimed that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) would be implemented across India by next week.
