BHUBANESWAR: A day after the Mumbai serial blasts, Rahul Gandhi on Thursday triggered a controversy saying it is very difficult to stop every single terror attack in the country. But, he asserted at a press conference, 99 per cent of such possible strikes in the country have been neutralised due to vigilance and intelligence efforts. ‘’One or two attacks will get through,’’ he remarked.Hours later, even though the Congress tried hard to defend his comment, an angry Opposition hit back at Rahul saying such remark at this juncture was unacceptable. The Congress scion did not stop at that. He justified his assertion. ‘’We will stop 99 per cent of terror attacks but one or two attacks might get through.’’ And then he added: ‘’We must try to stop 100 per cent of attacks. It is something we will fight and defeat.’’ Rahul also had words of praise for the UPA Government for the prompt response to the Mumbai blasts.“We are responding to it in a quite organised fashion,” he said. The country has improved very much in tackling these attacks. The Congress leader said the country has to fight terrorism at the local level. “We have improved by leaps and bounds. But terrorism is something that it is impossible to stop such attacks all the time,” he said. He also conveyed his condolences to all the families affected by Wednesday’s explosions.Reminded that there was no terror attack in the US after the 9/11 strike whereas India often faced the menace, Rahul said there may not be terror attacks inside America but they are facing attacks in other places, including Iraq and Afghanistan, where they are engaged.
