My favourite performance by a child actor is the one delivered by Jugal Hansraj in Masoom. He has portrayed the character so naturally that one can almost feel the pain of a child born out of an unplanned relationship. The movie is about those untold emotions. Unlike other movies where you get emotional seeing the emotional outburst of the protagonists, here you get emotional because the protagonist is not doing so.

Kunal Khemu in Zakhm really has to be admired. He has portrayed his character in a fantastic manner and his performance is mind-blowing. In a few instances he uses his eyes to express himself, and that's when you see how talented he is. He captivates you with a maturity and an innocence that is rare.

One of the best performances I have seen till date of a child actor which could put even the most adroit adult actors to shame was that of Shamili in the Tamil film Anjali. To portray the character of a mentally retarded girl with such finesse really deserves applause. With her gamut of expressions she brought tears to my eyes and touched my heart unlike any other character has till date. Be it the scene in which she is teased by the other children in her colony, or the scene when she finally responds to the motherly feelings of Revathy — Shamili performs like a pro.

One of the most stunning performances by a child actor is surely the one delivered by the little girl who played the young Manisha Koirala in Khamoshi. I don't know her name but her honest portrayal made me believe in her completely. I may even go so far as to say that her performance was at par with those of Nana Patekar and Seema Biswas. Who can forget the scene in which she learns from her father how to go door-to-door selling soap, or the scene where she tries to stop her mother from killing a chicken. She infused life into her character naturally without looking or sounding tortured like many other child actors do. If there was ever an unsung hero in the film, it was surely her.

My favourite performance by a child actor is the one by the little boy who played the character of a Sikh boy in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The reason — he speaks only one yet such a powerful line in the entire film, and marks his presence among the superstars by remaining silent through the rest of the film. Sabhi sitaron ko taare gina diye the bache ne...
