BANGALORE: The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) have finally ‘put their money where their mouth is,” as they distribute text books and note books to students from BBMP Schools and Pre-University Colleges, in the city. With many complaints of receiving text books and other study material late after the re-opening of Palike institutions in the previous years, Deputy Mayor S Harish distributed the academic material in the first week of the re-opening of schools. “Every year there used to be delays in distributing books,” he said and added that “this would pose as a big hurdle for students, who had to catch up with syllabus that had to be completed.” Stating that this caused considerable stress to the students, he said that this year, they had distributed the material in order to reduce these anomalies. He shared that all BBMP schools had reopened and the admission process to their five PU Colleges were complete.“Understanding these concerns, we had quickened the process of procurement of study material to distribute it to students in their first week of school itself,” he said. Adding to this, he also said that they were attempting to implement the CBSE Syllabus in the Sriramapura BBMP school. “This pilot project is being undertaken along with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and the BBMP”, he shared. Erstwhile chairman of the Standing Committee on Education in the Palike, BV Ganesh, had expressed the need to ‘equip’ the students from their schools and colleges to compete with their private counterparts. Added to this, the Palike has proposed to open a degree college for students who pass out from their institutions and also compulsory the inclusion of English in their syllabus to better the student’s communication skills.
