The alleged murder of a Bangladeshi MP, who came to Kolkata this month for his medical treatment, is not less than a potboiler, which has all the elements of money, betrayal and honeytrap.
Although Bangladeshi MP Anwarul Azim’s body is yet to be recovered, the West Bengal Police and Dhaka Police, in parallel probes, have arrested a woman and a butcher along with two others who allegedly chopped his body into small pieces and threw them at different locations of Kolkata.
The plot to kill the 56-year-old three-time MP from Awami League was set some months ago when 24-year-old butcher Jihad Hawladar, an illegal immigrant, was brought from Mumbai to Kolkata by a US citizen of Bangladeshi origin and Azim’s close friend, Akhtaruzzaman.
Sources told News18 that the MP was lured by a 24-year-old woman, identified as Silasti Rehman, now arrested, who took him to a New Town flat in Kolkata. She had then allegedly used chloroform on him to make him unconscious. A pillow was also used to smother him to death before being skinned and chopped into pieces by the butcher and three others.
They deskinned his entire body at the flat, chopped it, “added turmeric powder to delay decomposition” and put it inside plastic bags, according to a police officer. The washroom was cleaned with acid to erase the evidence. Then, they took the bags out of the flat, used different transports to dispose of the body pieces within the city limits.
The accused used more than one car to confuse the police. The Bangladeshi MP was picked up by one car and brought to New Town in another.
The accused butcher has confessed to the police that he and three other Bangladeshi nationals carried out the job as per the orders of Akhtaruzzaman.
On Friday, the West Bengal CID along with the accused tried to search for the remnants of the body but could not find them. They will resume their search again on Saturday.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police produced Hawaldar in a Barasat court on Friday, while three arrested persons, including the woman suspect Rehman, were taken to the Mahanagar sessions judge court.
Who is Akhtaruzzaman?
The Bangladesh security officials and West Bengal CID believe that the plan to kill Azim was devised by Akhtaruzzaman alias Shaheen, the younger brother of the mayor of Kotchandpur Municipality in Jhenaidah.
He reportedly paid the contract killers Rs 4 crore Bangladeshi taka to carry out the crime.
Akhtaruzzaman is believed to have fled India after Azim’s murder in the flat on May 13, a day after the MP arrived in Kolkata for the medical treatment.
Sources in the Dhaka Metropolitan Police say Azim and Akhtaruzzaman were childhood friends and were business partners in gold. They fell out over money involved in the business.
Akhtaruzzaman reportedly rented the New Town apartment in Kolkata for Rs 1 lakh on April 25. After some five days, he moved into the flat with a woman and a member of a Left extremist organisation. On May 13, two men picked up the MP and brought him to the New Town flat and smothered him to death.
It was on May 18 that Gopal Biswas, the long-term associate of Azim, filed a missing person report after he and the MP’s daughter tried contacting him upon receiving text messages purportedly from Azim that he was in New Delhi for some work.
