New Delhi: The controversial Chief Election Commissioner of Bangladesh M A Aziz resigned on Sunday amid allegations of bias against a major political alliance.

Aziz, who was on a three months leave, said he was stepping down to help create an environment acceptable to all political parties ahead of disputed parliamentary polls.

The resignation of Aziz came shortly after the election commission formally cancelled the now postponed January 22 general elections.

Scrapping all notifications regarding elections, President Iajuddin Ahmed signed an order to stall the elections on Saturday.

A protracted street campaign and blockade around Aziz’s office was started by Sheikh Hasina's Awami League-led grand alliance demanding his resignation and reconstitution of the commission.

Another controversial election commissioner S M Zakaria subsequently also went on leave in the face of continuing protest.

President Iajuddin Ahmed has accepted the resignation of Aziz.
