The death toll in the Malvani hooch tragedy in Mumbai continues to rise with at least 97 people confirmed dead after consuming contaminated liquor. At least 46 others are in the hospital receiving treatment.
The Mumbai police earlier arrested five people on charges of selling the contaminated liquor. They were sent to police custody till June 26.
Meanwhile, as many as eight police officers have been suspended on charges of negligence and connivance while four officers of the excise department have also been suspended for negligence. A departmental inquiry might be initiated against them soon.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered a probe into the hooch tragedy and the police has been asked to submit a report as soon as possible. The case has been transferred to the Mumbai crime branch.
On Wednesday, the victims consumed liquor at a shop in Malvani and fell sick the next morning. It was evident by Thursday evening that they had consumed contaminated liquor.
